    Traditional Houses In Kerala

    NALUKETTU HOUSES

The traditional big house of Kerala was called the nalukettu. The nalukettu was a typical feature of the Kerala tharavadu tradition, where joint families lived together for generations with a patriarch and matriarch overseeing all their affairs. The larger and wealthier families had ettukettu and pathinaarukettu featured with eight and sixteen blocks with two, four and rarely six courtyards respectively. These houses were built according to the scientific principles of the traditional Thachu Shastra (the science of architecture) developed during the 18th and 19th centuries. Houses were constructed facing the east.

Kerala homes involve a lot of traditional materials in their home designs, mainly wood and bricks. Wood is used for rafters of the roof, for beams and columns, for paneling of staircases, for parapets of the poomukham (the first space of the house) and even for ornately designed pillars. Good quality woods –like teak and rosewood were used. The entrance to the house would have a verandah designed to receive visitors. Charupady is a seating that enables one to take advantage of poomukham and verandah and can enjoy breeze and rain easily. Inside, the nadumuttam is surrounded by rooms on all sides. A special room was meant to store valuables. Granaries, cattle sheds, kitchen and utility, dining halls, bathrooms, bedrooms, Pooja rooms, wells, and other purpose-built spaces filled all the corners of a naalukettu. The roofing of Kerala houses is one element that will definitely catch your attention.

Since it is a zone of rainfall, there are no flat roofs. They play an important function of keeping the interiors of the house cool from within and the roof pitch help in easy drainage of water off the roof. Woodwork and pillars (chitrathoonukal) is a prominent feature of traditional Kerala homes. Clay tiles enable us to keep the interiors cool in any weather condition. The beautifully polished red oxide is generally red, but may also be black and brown. Wooden flooring is also seen in some traditional houses.

    TRADITIONAL HOUSES OF TAMILNADU

They have adapted sensibilities unique to their particular culture. Though styles differ in origin, traditional homes tend to have several common features.

    CHETTINAD HOUSES

The houses of Chettinad region within Tamil Nadu are a unique blend of tradition and beauty. We build chettinad style traditional villas in Coimbatore which are landmarks of Tamilnadu. From intricate woodwork to colorful ceramic tiles chettinad design homes are alluring one. Most of the chettinadu houses has a columned verandah at the front. The stout pillars of Teak might have been imported from Burma, where they had meetings. The roofs of their homes were designed to collect waters which then drained into local village ponds through a network of channels. The front facade of the house will have towers on either side of the columned verandah. These towers contains small rooms which are used to conduct discussions. Intricately carved front door is another feature of Chettinadu houses. The houses have their front doors on one street and their backdoors on a parallel running street. The flooring is typically laid in red-oxide, as is in the rest of the residence. The Teak pillars of the house is raised by verandah/Thinnai called Muggapu where photos of the older generation of the family lie. There will be a spacious inner courtyard, which has thin stone pillars on all sides. Around the inner courtyard a series of rooms will be built which is used for the purpose of sleeping, storing grains and praying. There will be another courtyard at the rear side of the house were cooking will be done and also served as a place for the women to socialize. The technique of wall designing gave them impeccable, smooth finish. Stucco art decorated walls and paintings from stencils created rich interiors.
